Prepare the site by marking the exact column locations using a laser level or chalk line, ensuring the layout matches the architectural plan and that each column position is centred, square, and aligned with adjoining structures.
Check the footing or slab for level, strength, and load capacity, confirming it is suitable for supporting a precast JCV column and applying a thin moisture barrier if the slab is porous or exposed to weather.
Install the base plate or footing anchors by positioning the plate precisely on the marked location, drilling holes for M10–M12 anchors, and securing them with chemical epoxy such as Hilti HIT‑RE 500, making sure the plate is perfectly level before proceeding.
Lift the JCV column carefully using lifting straps with a block‑and‑tackle or a crane, ensuring the straps are secured around the shaft only and never placed on the decorative cap or edges. Maintain full control of the column during lifting and lower it slowly onto the base plate or footing, avoiding twisting, sudden movements, or impact. If the installation requires fixing the column to the roof first, install the roof bracket securely, then lift the column from the ground and slide it into position, ensuring the shaft has been cut precisely to the required height so it fits cleanly into the bracket. Have one person stabilise the base with the shaft while two others guide and slide the column into the bracket, keeping the shaft aligned throughout the process. Mega epoxy may be applied to the top of the cap as an optional bonding method before final placement. Throughout the entire procedure, ensure the base, shaft, and bracket remain perfectly aligned before completing the installation.
Align the column vertically using a laser level, checking plumb in both directions and inserting rubber shims under the base if fine adjustments are needed to achieve perfect alignment.
Fix the column mechanically using the appropriate JCV method, which may include internal threaded rods tightened with washers and nuts, bolting through pre‑cast holes in the column base, or sliding the column over a hidden bracket system and locking it with concealed screws, ensuring all fixings are stainless steel for outdoor durability.
Apply non‑shrink grout around the base of the column, filling any gaps between the column and the footing or base plate to create a solid, stable connection and prevent movement or rocking once cured.
Seal all joints using exterior‑grade polyurethane sealant, such as SikaFlex 11FC or Bostik Seal N Flex, to protect against water ingress, weather exposure, and long‑term deterioration.
Finish the column surface with JCV‑approved paint or sealer, ensuring even coverage and proper curing time to protect the concrete and enhance appearance.
If installing JCV pier caps, create a 10–15 mm mortar bed on top of the pier, lower the cap gently into position, tap lightly to level, and seal the perimeter to prevent water penetration and maintain structural integrity.
Perform final checks by confirming the column is stable, secure, and perfectly plumb, verifying that all fixings are tight, grout is cured, sealant is applied cleanly, and the column is ready for load or decorative installation.
